India's ITC misses profit estimates as competition, costs rise
  + stars: | 2023-10-19 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
REUTERS/Vivek Prakash/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsBENGALURU/CHENNAI, Oct 19 (Reuters) - India's ITC (ITC.NS) reported a smaller-than-expected rise in its second-quarter profit on Thursday, as the consumer goods major grappled with stiff competition from smaller rivals and higher prices of some commodities. Dove-soapmaker Hindustan Unilever said earlier in the day it lost some market share in its mass segment - comprising lower-priced products - due to competition. The tobacco-to-hotels conglomerate's profit still rose 10% to 49.27 billion rupees ($592.81 million), but missed analysts' average estimate of 49.54 billion rupees, according to data from LSEG. Revenue from operations rose 3% to 177.05 billion rupees, helped by a 10% surge in its cigarettes business. Other consumer goods majors Nestle India (NEST.NS) and Hindustan Unilever eased past quarterly earnings estimates earlier on Thursday, as city dwellers spent more on affordable pick-me-ups like cookies and coffee.

Disney is exploring various possibilities, including selling some of its Indian operations or a mix of assets from the unit, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. Disney, Sun TV and the Gautam Adani-controlled Adani group did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment. Disney was exploring options to sell or find a joint venture partner for its India digital and TV business, Reuters reported in July. Disney has faced increasing pressure due to the emergence of Reliance Industries' (RELI.NS) streaming platform JioCinema, run by Asia's richest man, Mukesh Ambani. Ambani has been marketing his streaming platform by offering free access to the Indian Premier League cricket tournament, digital rights of which were earlier with Disney.

Employees of Indian software company Infosys walk past Infosys logos at their campus in the Electronic City area in Bangalore September 4, 2012. REUTERS/Vivek Prakash/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsBENGALURU, Oct 5 (Reuters) - J.P.Morgan analysts expect investors to parse upcoming second-quarter results and commentary from Indian IT companies for signs of recovery in deal signings in fiscal 2025 following a "washout" year. The focus for this quarter's earnings reports will be on deal signings as well as the split of new deals versus renewals to assess fiscal 2025 growth, the analysts said. J.P.Morgan expects high single-digit earnings growth, in percentage terms, for large-cap IT companies in fiscal 2025, while market expectations are for double-digit growth. Nonetheless, J.P.Morgan upgraded Infosys (INFY.NS) to "neutral" from "underweight" saying lower expectations were baked in and its large deal wins give visibility into fiscal 2025.

SAP Labs India Managing Director Sindhu Gangadharan hopes the Indian unit will scale up its share of global SAP patents to 50% from 25% currently, she said in an interview on the sidelines of an event in Bengaluru. SAP Labs India, which employs over 15,000 people, aims to embed generative AI across its products to cater better to the changing needs of its clients ranging from Thermax (THMX.NS) to Dabur India (DABU.NS). "Through AI, India can solidify its IT supremacy," Gangadharan had said in the event, earlier in the day. The comments come as SAP looks to "double down" on investments in India, its fastest growing region and home to 40% of its global Research and Development (R&D) activity. Gangadharan, while referring to the regulation of AI, said there should be a "great amount of responsibility barriers with flexibility to the end-user".

BENGALURU, Aug 11 (Reuters) - India's Patanjali Foods (PAFO.NS) on Friday reported a 63.6% drop in first-quarter profit as high costs dented margins. Total revenue from operations increased 7.7% to 77.67 billion rupees, while total expenses rose 9.3% due to higher purchases of stock-in-trade and employee costs. Government intervention for lowering prices in spite of holding high-priced inventory impacted profitability negatively during the quarter, the company added. REUTERS/Adnan Abidi/File PhotoNEW DELHI/BENGALURU, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Tata Group on Thursday unveiled a new logo, branding and plane livery for Air India as part of a multi-million dollar transformation of the former state-run carrier. The airline's new logo includes a design with golden, red and purple colours, and will replace the old logo of a red swan with orange spokes. Triumph said it has received orders for over 14,000 Speed 400 bikes, exceeding its total India sales of the past decade. India's Infosys signs $454-mln deal with Danske Bank

BENGALURU, June 26 (Reuters) - Infosys (INFY.NS), India's No.2 IT services provider, signed a $454-million contract with Denmark's Danske Bank on Monday, at a time when the broader sector is struggling with a slowdown in an uncertain global economy. The IT company will help digitize the lender's core business and add more cloud and data facilities to it, including Infosys acquiring Danske Bank's IT centre in India, it said in a regulatory filing. The contract is for five years, with an option to renew for one more year for a maximum of three times. Bengaluru-based Infosys' contract comes days after Mumbai-based bigger rival TCS signed a deal worth 840 million pounds with British pension scheme Nest, for an starting tenure of 10 years. "Despite a strengthened order pipeline, the effects of this deal might be offset by macro factors such as inflation and increased labour costs," Akshara Bassi, an analyst at Counterpoint Research, said on the Danske Bank deal.

BENGALURU, June 16 (Reuters) - Indian information technology (IT) company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS.NS) said on Friday it has mutually agreed with insurance provider Transamerica to end a $2 billion contract, citing reasons including a challenging macro environment. The 10-year contract, signed in early 2018, involved TCS working with U.S.-based Transameria to enable the digitization of more than 10 million policies into a single integrated platform. Administration of those policies, including life insurance and retirement and investment solutions, will be moved to a new servicing model, which will take about 30 months, TCS said. "It's more of a sentimental negative rather than a big impact on the financials of TCS," said Siddhartha Khemka, head of retail research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services. "We don't see a big impact because of this.

There are pockets of optimism elsewhere in the services sector - especially in accounting, where there is a surge in hiring. NLB sees a 20-25% drop in IT employee additions in the first half of the current financial year, while TeamLease Digital expects a 40% decrease for the entire year. Nasscom declined comment on the hiring slowdown. That has "surely left applicants concerned about future prospects", said staffing firm Xpheno's co-founder Kamal Karanth, who highlighted how current hiring activity was "under a third of what was recorded in the buoyant peak". Pai highlighted sectors such as financial services, consumer goods, specialised manufacturing, medicine, law, chartered accounting and other services as more viable options.

BENGALURU, May 31 (Reuters) - Contract manufacturer Dixon Technologies (India) Ltd (DIXO.NS) on Wednesday said it is partnering with Xiaomi Corp's (1810.HK) Indian arm to make and export phones for the Chinese firm. KKR to invest $250 million more in India's Serentica Renewables

"This latest investment will support the company's effort to achieve 4000MW of installed renewable energy capacity that will aid clean energy delivery to large-scale industrial customers," Serentica Renewables said in a statement. KKR, which jointly holds Serentica with billionaire Anil Agarwal's Twinstar Overseas Ltd, had in November committed to invest $400 million in the company. Founded last year, Serentica focuses on industrial decarbonisation by making renewables the primary source of energy for the commercial and industrial sectors, that use more than 50% of the electricity generated in India. The monetary policy committee (MPC) retained the key lending rate or the repo rate (INREPO=ECI) at 6.50% in a unanimous decision. With the likely softening of CPI to the low- to mid-5% levels in the coming month, the current repo rate of 6.5% implies that India’s real policy rate will hover around 1% during 2023-24, while maintaining a policy rate differential of about 1.5% with the US. Room for additional rate hikes has been retained with MPC’s policy stance continuing to remain unchanged at ‘withdrawal of accommodation’. We believe the bar for future rate hikes has increased, especially since near-term prints of CPI will be sub 6%. Scope for further hikes is limited given our growth-inflation outlook and impact of the past rate hikes on the same.

BENGALURU, Nov 14 (Reuters) - India's smartphone market fell by 10% year-on-year last quarter to 43.5 million units, marking the lowest third-quarter shipment since 2019, and a high inventory pile-up is expected to lead to a muted fourth quarter, market research firm IDC said on Monday. Despite the festival season beginning earlier than usual, the unrelenting rise in prices pulled down shipments in the world's second-biggest smartphone market, IDC said. The average selling price jumped 15% year-over-year, and 6% from the previous quarter, to a record $226, IDC said. Moreover, the inventory pile-up and post-festive tapering in demand will lead to a muted fourth quarter, said Navkendar Singh, associate vice president, devices research, IDC. IDC expects 2022 shipments of around 150 million units, a decline of 8-9% over the previous year, and Singh does not expect 2023 to be any better.
